VOCABULARY · A SLOVO GUIDE
Russian Word of the Day: One New Word, Every Day
A Russian word of the day is a small, repeatable habit: learn one word with its stress mark and pronunciation, use it in a short phrase, and recall it the next day before you meet a new one. Today’s word is below with audio, followed by a week of beginner words to keep going.
Today’s Russian word
чай
tea
Say the word aloud twice, paying attention to the stressed vowel marked with an accent. Then use it in the smallest phrase you can: чай with э́то (“this is”) or мой/моя́ (“my”) is often enough. Come back tomorrow and try to recall today’s meaning before you look at the new word.
This week’s words
These are the next seven words in the list. Each starts a day; use the audio buttons to hear them.
| Day | Russian | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|
| +1 | за́втра | tomorrow | |
| +2 | чита́ть | to read | |
| +3 | окно́ | window | |
| +4 | и́мя | name | |
| +5 | пожа́луйста | please; you’re welcome | |
| +6 | сыр | cheese | |
| +7 | шко́ла | school |
One note on pronunciation: in сего́дня (today) the letter г sounds like в, so it is said “see-VOD-nya”. Unstressed о also sounds closer to “a”, which is why молоко́ is said “ma-la-KO”. The pronunciation guide explains both patterns.
A one-minute daily routine
- Recall yesterday’s word. Cover the meaning and say it first.
- Meet today’s word. Listen, repeat it with the stress, and read it in Cyrillic.
- Use it once. Make a two-word phrase or point to the object and name it.
- See it again later. A second look in the evening does more than a long session once a week.
One word a day adds up to about thirty a month, which is a good foundation but not a course on its own. Pair it with the first-month study plan and the vocabulary recall routine as your list grows.
Keep the word on your Home Screen

Its Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets keep the word in view between sessions, so you meet it again without opening the app. The daily word is free; additional features are available through in-app purchases.

Common questions
Is one Russian word a day enough?
It is a good way to build a habit, but not a complete course. About thirty words a month gives you a base; grammar, listening, reading, and speaking practice turn those words into conversation.
Why do the words have accent marks?
The accent marks show the stressed syllable, which changes how vowels sound. Everyday Russian texts usually leave them out; learning materials include them so you can say each word correctly.
How does Slovo’s daily word work?
Slovo for iPhone shows a new Russian word each day with pronunciation, a meaning, and an example. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets keep it visible. The daily word is free; other features are in-app purchases.
